$CHAPTER NINETEEN

“You seem tense,” Leandros said, appearing from around the corner.

Standing in front of the larger mirror placed by the front entrance, I smoothed my tie. “I need to visit the factions. I expect an uneven abundance of grief and groveling.”

“I’ll come with.”

Arching a brow, I nodded slowly. Leandros was in better spirits than I had seen in centuries. I buttoned my coat. “Leave the palace and follow me on what aims to be a frustrating task?”

“Why not? I’ve already set everyone to task about the dinner you didn’t tell me about.”

“I knew you’d hear of it, regardless.”

“And I decided to help, even if you still won’t reveal what game you’re playing with your little angel princess. Dinner isn’t your brand of seduction. Too subtle.”

I snorted but didn’t reply. Over time Leandros had left the palace less and less until it simply made sense that he be in charge of it. Yet now he wished to get out, and had managed several sentences without calling me “Lord,” so I didn’t see a reason to decline his company.

I gave an approving nod, and we set out. “The Sanguines will be our first stop.”

The Sanguines were the most dangerous faction, not through strength or number but due to their sheer power of influence. They were one of the few breeds of demon that needed to feed somewhat regularly, and they fed on flesh and blood. Their kind had tainted the human realm with a similar affliction, though I wasn’t sure how. It was quite possible the Sanguine’s weren’t sure either. It was one of the many things that happened when Lucifer’s curse was still fresh and adapting.

“They’ve been the most vocal lately,” I said with a sigh.

“Of course. Why lead up to that pain when you can dive right in?” Leandros quipped.

I hadn’t always been at war with the Sanguines. When the fogs of the curse had cleared and the Sanguine breed rose, we held an easy truce. It wasn’t until towards the end of Lucifer’s second revolt that their leader, a female called only “The Countess,” had sided against me and succeeded in separating me from my allies.

I was forced into hiding but became trapped by the vicious blood vines which at the time covered much of hell in thick sporadic patches. The plant had held and torn at me for days, but since they couldn’t kill me, they drank of my blood and absorbed my ripped flesh. The blood changed the vines, and by the time the Sanguines came upon me, I had control of those that had originally held me.

Perhaps that would not have been such a high offense, but in reality, I had gained control of every single vine in hell, my blood having saturated deep and infected the root system that ran through the entirety of the remains of the Underworld.

The Sanguines were infuriated that their vines had been stolen and could now be used against them. After I regained power, the Sanguines took it upon themselves
